“Reaching the Summit” at Centennial
Middle School
The 2002 Oregon Green Schools Summit faced many challenges this year, but
we still managed to put on an exciting, inspiring day of fun and learning
for 264 students, teachers, and volunteers from 44 schools around the state.
Stacy Allison, the first American woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest,
gave a great talk about her adventures, and what she learned about goal-setting,
dedication, and teamwork.
We had several great sessions, including "Recycling Family Feud",
a new game show-style presentation developed by Megan Stein of Newberg
Garbage Service. There
were several hands-on activities, including papermaking, a closer look at
compost critters, and video production techniques. We were also fortunate
to have Patty Moore, who came all the way from California to share information
on plastics recycling.
The Summit would not be possible without the
support of the Oregon Refuse and Recycling Association, local garbage
haulers who provided scholarships
to attending schools, and our other sponsors, including Far West Fibers,
Waste Connections, Oregon DEQ, Marion County Solid Waste, Metro, Willamette
Resources, City of Portland BES, City of Gresham DES, Weyerhaeuser, and
Robert & Kathryn Bunn.
Thanks again to all our sponsors, to the great folks at Centennial Middle
School, and to all the volunteers who helped put the Summit together. We
couldn't do it without you!
